Is It Necessary to Go for Roof Cleaning?

All of us know that the roof is one of the most important parts of a home or commercial building. In addition to keeping out water, a roof contributes to the look of a home and helps with a structure's energy efficiency and comfort. A well-installed roof is meant to last decades, unless of course it pre-maturely deteriorates due to environmental conditions. This is when it might be well-worth investigating, getting the roof professionally inspected and cleaned.

As a home or building's roof ages, problems can crop up due to exposure to moisture, wind and sun. This leads to the accumulation of dirt and grime, algae, moss, fungus and other organic growths. If left unchecked, these issues slowly degrade the roof material and lead to damage and ultimately roofing material failure. Regular cleaning and maintenance keeps damage at bay and significantly extends the life of the roof. It is generally much more economical to regularly inspect and if necessary clean a roof, then to wait until it needs repair. For in addition to the roof repair itself, one may find themselves needing to repair rotting interior portions of the building due to moisture exposure. Some preventative maintenance can save significant pounds later on.

Each climate condition brings on different potential issues. With the UK's frequent rain and moist atmosphere things are more often damp. Exposure to wet conditions in and of itself isn't necessarily the biggest factor in organic growth accumulation, however. A home or building that is surrounded by trees is more at risk: shade from trees block sun exposure which keeps the roof moist; trees spread a higher than normal number of algae spores carried by wind; and leaf accumulation can clog gutters and roof valleys leading to water retention. All of these situations contribute to faster roof deterioration and damage. In addition to keeping the roof clean to add to its useful lifespan, a clean roof also makes a home look much more inviting and eye-pleasing. This is key component to maintain a home or building's long-term value.

Whether cleaning a roof one's self or using a professional, it is important to use the right approach for the roofing material on the building. Amongst the common methods used, cleaning solutions are often applied to kill and loosen moss and algae that accumulates on the roof. A sturdy brushing of the surface followed by a fresh water rinse leaves shingles clean. In some cases another solution is applied to help inhibit future organic growth. For more stubborn organic growth and grime, a power washing is often recommended. With this method a high-pressure jet of water removes material. This approach is best left to professionals as too high a pressure can damage the roof or poor technique can force water under shingles.

One must also be cautious about the type of cleaning solutions applied. It is important that the chemical ingredients in the cleaning fluid be appropriate for the roofing material. Also of more consideration these days is the potential environmental hazard associated various ingredients. A diluted solution of chlorine bleach is a tried and true method; however the application and run-off must be properly handled to avoid streaking and staining. In consideration of the environment, many now prefer organic solutions or opt to simply forgo cleansers at all and rely on brushing or power washing.

No matter what one's personal preference though, it is important to give attention and care to the roof. Regular inspection and cleaning by a professional firm will certainly pay off in the long run.

Taking Good Care of Your Hard Wood Floor With Wax Finish

The best advantage of having hard wood floor is that you don't have to worry about allergens getting trapped like they do in carpet. Cleaning the floor at least twice a week using the right vacuum cleaner, sweeper, dry mop and wood floor cleaner, keeps the floor from abrasive build up and keeps its shine much longer.

If stains find its way to your floor, clean it right away. This will prevent the substance from staining the hard wood floor and saves you the hassle of having to remove the stain later on. To clean the stain on the floor use a hot water, a clean cloth and a cleaning solution that is suited for hard wood floors. Do not use abrasive cleaners as it will damage the coating of the floor.

Maintenance Guide for Waxed Finish Hard Wood Floors

If vacuum cleaning, mopping or sweeping does not make your wax finish floor shiny again, buffing it is your next best choice. Buffing should be done first before you apply a second coat. Often times you would not need a new layer to coat after buffing. If buffing does not make your floor shiny, you'll have to use a liquid wax for wood floors and a wood floor cleaner. Apply the wax to the floor and buff it after it dries.

In removing stains from waxed finish floors, here are some tips that you can follow:

Ink stains and water Stains- to remove this type of stain use a #000 steel wool. If it won't work try using a sand paper with fine grain together with a wood floor cleaner and a #00 steel wool. After that make sure you wax and buff the area.

Common Surface Marks- common scratches and marks on the surface of your wax finish floor can be adhered by applying wax on the area. Buff the area to restore its shine.

Food stains- In cleaning this type of stain use a damp cloth and start cleaning on the outer surface of the stain and move your way inside. After removing the stain see to it that you dry and wax it afterwards.

Sticky Stains- harden the stain by applying a cold pack of ice. When the stain hardens it should crumble off of the floor. Use a rag or cloth to clean the stain off.

Furthermore, to avoid unwanted scratches on your floor, never drag heavy equipment and furniture across your waxed floor. Also, if your kitchen and bath room floors are made of wax coated hardwood floors, place a rug directly below the sink and on the door step of the bathrooms.

Get Bad Smells Off Your Carpet

The material that is used to make carpets is pretty much easy to guess. The fibers used for carpet making are porous and consequently they easily absorb residue into the fabrics. This is especially true for juice, tea or coffee spills that provoke unpleasant odors in the house. When these spills are not promptly and properly dealt with, they cause bad smell which may lead to air pollution in the house. Needless to say this pollution is a potential health hazard for those living in the house.

I know the question running through your mind now is, what do I do to get the horrible odor off my carpet?

My oldest tip for treating a smelly carpet, while at the same time steering clear of the shampooing process, would be to spread a good amount of baking powder on the carpet and leaving it on for a while. After leaving the baking soda on for a while, vacuum the carpet for a fresh smell.

Home Uses of Baking Soda and vinegar

There is no doubt, looking back at its long history of use, that baking soda is a precious element when it comes to getting rid of carpet odors or any other odor from fiber objects. Another very useful product that helps to get rid of bad smell is vinegar. A blend of two parts of water and one part of vinegar can be scrubbed unto a carpet to deal with odor issues. This option is more affordable than buying shampoo dedicated to carpet cleaning or hiring a shampooing cleaner for the same purpose.

The use of fresh air

Indeed, the use of fresh air to clear your carpet of odors may seem a little strange for a beginner. However, this method is a good aid in combating carpet stench. Nevertheless, spraying a carpet or air freshener on the carpet will only mask the smell for a little while. If you want to thoroughly handle the odor, it would prove inadvertently wise to do intensive shampooing of the carpet. The type of shampoo to use for this would be one that is very strongly scented. To get the best of this cleaning process, you would want to do several repetitions. You will want to concentrate most of your efforts on the particular area that was affected and that is causing the bad smell.

Furthermore, you may scrub the affected areas with a brush before you start the shampooing and vacuuming process. Should in case the shampooing does not give the desired results, you will need to pull up the carpet from the floor and clean beneath. Pulling up a carpet is no walk in the park; you must therefore take all things into consideration.

Indeed, you can use the strongly scented shampoo to get rid of odors provoked by pet urine. However, the scent may not completely go away. As such, you may need to hire the services of a professional carpet cleaner for such delicate situations. If the services of the professional do not deal squarely with the situation, you may want to give up the carpet and get a new one.

7 Steps To Longer Lasting Upholstery

It seems like furniture never really gets thrown out. Once the sofa in the living room starts looking shabby, it will go downstairs to live in the basement for a decade or so. Once it starts making the basement look bad, there's always a less picky friend looking for a free sofa. This "Sofa Cycle" is one we're all familiar with.

But what if we could extend the first part of that cycle? What if you could keep your upholstery looking fresh and new longer? You see, by establishing an upholstery care routine and following a few quick tips you can prevent premature shabbiness due to heavy use and soiling. Even lightly used pieces will benefit from these seven tips:

1. Vacuum: The most important thing you can do to keep your upholstery looking clean is to vacuum it regularly. Try to vacuum your furniture once every week to capture dirt, pet hair, and dust. This prevents that debris from being worked into the upholstery fabric.

2. Avoid the Sun: Ideally, keep upholstered furniture away from windows and direct sunlight. This will help prevent the sun from bleaching your fabrics.

3. Rotate Your Cushions: Simple as it sounds, rotating to your cushions can add a lot of life to your furniture. Like rotating your tires, it makes sure that wear is distributed evenly and that one side does not become too dirty or worn.

4. The Sofa is for Sitting: Try to keep the upholstery free of activities or products that could stain or damage it. As much as your kids want to use their markers to draw a picture while sitting on the sofa, its best to keep them away from the fabric until they know how to draw within the lines.

5. The Pet Problem: Great as pets are, they can be terrible for your upholstery. If you allow pets on your furniture, the oils in their hair and fur, the dirt they carry around, and their dander will make your upholstery look and feel dirty faster. To keep your upholstery healthy, keep your pets off of it.

6. Not Just Covers: Sometimes cushion covers can be removed and put in the wash, which is great when you're taking care of an emergency spill. If you do this too often, though, the cushion color won't match the rest of the upholstery that hasn't been cleaned.

7. Hire a Pro: Once or twice a year - depending on how much use the piece sees - you should have a professional clean your upholstery. This will help remove the oils and embedded dirt your vacuuming can't take care of. Most carpet cleaning services also offer upholstery services.

Five Tips To Consider When Searching For A House Cleaning Company

Determine the Level of Service You Need

Before you search for a cleaning company, decide what kind of assistance you need. Do you require a one-time cleaning before a big event, a move-in or move-out cleaning, or do you want a regular service schedule of weekly, biweekly, monthly, or bimonthly cleanings? Knowing these details before you look online or offline allows you to weed out those companies that are not able to offer what you need.

Know Service Options Available

Once you've determined what type of cleaning you want, search for companies that offer the widest variety of options. Clearing clutter is generally not in their purview, but many companies offer services such as window cleaning or floor polishing on an as-needed basis.

In this case, it may be important to make sure the crew selected is English-speaking. Communication is very important when you have detailed instructions to relay. For instance, if you have allergies and need the crew to use or to avoid certain cleaners or you have areas that require special treatment, you want to be assured that your directions are clearly understood and any questions are easily conveyed.

Do They Have Insurance?

Make sure that the company you are considering has employees that are bonded and insured. It is also wise to determine if the company carries worker's compensation or general liability insurance. If a house cleaner accidentally slips and falls, you want to have the peace of mind that you won't end up in a lawsuit. Most legitimate companies possess all of these requirements.

Ensuring Security

Many people are not home when their houses are being cleaned, so keys must be given to the cleaning company to allow employees access when you are away. It is important to know how the company safeguards these keys. For example, knowing that the keys are coded instead of labeled with a name and address and that they are kept locked away when not in use is a good practice, and one that shows the company has a commitment to your security.

References

Finally, legitimate companies usually offer testimonials online and allow you to speak with current or past customers upon request. Speaking with existing clients is preferred, as you can get an idea of the company's ongoing practices and policies. Most reputable house cleaners are eager to share customer feedback with potential clients with the hope of earning their business.

Some Hidden Dangers of A Dirty Carpet

Nowadays, the carpet is a piece of furniture, the cleaning of which, is very often minimized and even unconsidered by some home owners. It is not uncommon to see many people clean their carpets only when there is an occasion or when they are moving into a new place. The best time for you to do some carpet cleaning is when you are settled in your home or just before you move homes. You should know by now that the dangers of not paying for the services of a seasoned and prolific carpet cleaner are umpteenth. You must make an effort to have regular carpet cleaning sessions a minimum of two times a year.

Take for instance a light colored carpet such as white; it could look very sharp and cute at surface level but very disgusting within its fibers. Carpets are the most known materials for absorbing and storing dirt.

Actually a lot of people do not realize how important it is to have a professional carpet cleaner do the job for them. It is important because the professional knows exactly what to do in every situation. They know what product to use and what machine works best for every type of carpet fiber. When your carpet is not properly cleaned, it could lead to very precarious health hazards that will use up more money than a few carpet cleaning sessions would. There is a very high rate of fungus and mold that grows in carpets that have silk, cotton, wool or other common carpet fabrics. Such fabrics are suitable environments for their growth, when not properly cared for. The same applies to our sofas, rugs and some well known upholstery.

However, the great majority of carpets nowadays are made with synthetic fiber. Such fibers, as they are not natural, do not easily favor the growth of fungi and mold within their fabrics. They do have issues that need to be handled to prevent them from causing havoc in our various homes. It is very easy for carpets to harbor such pollutants as dander, dust and pollen. There are hardly any doubts as to how polluting these elements can be to the air around us.

A single carpet cleaning session will prove to the owner that the home can feel fresher and a lot more comfortable. When there is a professional carpet cleaning session in your home, everything is different; the air is fresher, the carpet feels softer, beautiful and clean, while the entire house feels more warm and welcoming to everyone. You don't want to turn your home into a sickbed just because you do not constantly clean your carpet.

A regular carpet cleaning session would give the carpet a life span of about 10 to 15 years of healthy living and beauty. Give your family the best of carpets by taking your cleaning sessions seriously.

Flooding Damage Control Tips

If you or someone you know has recently become the victim of flood damage, you know exactly how traumatic such an experience can be. In addition to causing substantial emotional and mental duress, a flood causes physical damage to property and can prove incredibly expensive.

When a flood strikes, the most significant thing that a homeowner can do is to act quickly. The damage caused by a flood can grow exponentially worse if left untreated. Fortunately, there are a number of effective actions you can take immediately if your home has been affected by flood water. Adhering to the following flooding damage control tips can help you salvage a large portion of your possessions and help to expedite the process of reclaiming your home.

Insurance: First and foremost, it is crucial to protect your home and your possessions with a flood insurance policy. Homeowner's insurance does not pay for loss of property due to flood damage. Regardless of where you live, it is important to understand that heavy rains and flash floods can occur without warning, even in areas in which flooding is not common.

Carpets: If your home is affected by flood, the carpeted areas will most likely be the primary focus of your concern. This is because water that seeps into carpeting can quickly form mold and mildew, both of which can be harmful to you and your family and are expensive to remove. Carpets and rugs should be dried as quickly as is possible after excess flood water has been removed. Open all windows in the house in order to allow faster drying and to further prevent mold formation. After the carpet is completely dry, vacuum with an effective carpet cleaner to remove odors and stains.

Flooring: If left untreated, flood damage to floors can eventually cause major structural issues within the foundation of your home. When saturated for an extended period of time, wooden floor boards can harbor moisture for months following the flood. Mold spores are often found in concentrated amounts beneath tiles and stone flooring, as these types of floors are difficult to replace without the assistance of a proficient flooring expert. Take care to remove as much water as possible quickly after flooding has stopped. Use a sump pump to remove excess water to avoid damage and potential injury.

Furniture: Though the majority of flood damaged furniture is relatively difficult to salvage, certain pieces can be saved with thorough cleaning and care. Leather furniture is most frequently counted as a total loss, but if the damage is minimal, it may be possible to replace certain parts and save the entire piece. When treating upholstered furniture that has been submerged in flood water for an extended period of time, consider the fact that cushions and other fillings will most likely need to be replaced. Even if dried completely, this type of stuffing can harbor millions of microscopic mold spores. If possible, remove all exterior coverings and launder them as directed by the manufacturer's labeling. Use a quality rust inhibitor to protect all metal components, such as springs and frames. Wooden frames should be left outside in the sun to dry before you attempt to reassemble furniture.

Safety with electrical appliances: Electrical appliances that have been submerged, even for a short period of time, should not be used until they are serviced by a certified electrical repair professional. Never turn on electrical appliances that have been damaged by flood water, as this can result in overheating, fire or injury by electric shock. An electrician should also be consulted before turning on fans, lights or other appliances operated by a wall switch, as water can remain within the walls of your home and cause major malfunction of wires and circuits.

Safety with gas appliances: Gas appliances that have been damaged by flood water should also be inspected and repaired by a certified professional before they are used. Even if a gas appliance appears to be functioning properly, it is possible that its safety features have been disabled by the presence of standing water, making them extremely dangerous to operate. Gas leaks, also often caused by flood water damage, can cause fires and explosions if exposed to flame. Always turn off the main valve to your water heater if you suspect a gas leak and call your gas company immediately to remedy the problem.

Going Green When Cleaning

Some of the largest pollutants that we use as a business nearly everyday are often things that we do not even necessarily think of as pollutants, and that is the simple cleaning products we use such as hand wash soap in cloakrooms. On top of this if you work in any office then the chances are that you have commercial cleaners coming in every evening that may well be using a range of cleaning products that are anything but green.

Indeed a simple look around in your cleaners cupboard, may find a locked cabinet for storing cleaning supplies, and one of the main reasons for this is that many of the cleaning chemicals still in use today are toxic and anything but green in nature.

Yet the pressure on all companies to go green is increasing month on month, with pressure coming upon businesses from Governments and lobby groups alike.

So if you have any concerns whatsoever as to what cleaning products your cleaning company is using, then why not sit down with your cleaner and find out if they have a "Green" policy and how it affects you, or if they do not then why not work with them to look at using alternative green products in your offices.

This is a genuine concern for a lot of companies as many of the detergents in use today cause a lot of harm to the environment as often the detergents cannot be easily or cheaply removed from your waste water by your local water company.

Also having a green policy when it comes to cleaning products is something that you can use as a plus point in your company brochures.

Going green when it comes to cleaning supplies need not cost anymore than buying non-green cleaning supplies in the majority of cases, although there are some chemicals where no credible green alternative yet exists.

Widely used cleaning products that are now available in environmentally friendly versions are washroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, hand wash soap, air freshener, heavy duty cleaner, multi-surface cleaner, carpet cleaner, glass cleaner and even degreasing products. So as you can see the list of products available that are environmentally friendly cover the majority of cleaning supplies that any commercial cleaner will need to use.

If you employ your own cleaners and buy cleaning supplies in for them to use then why not make the switch over to green products and help the environment out today.

Top DIY Carpet Cleaning Methods

Carpet is a common floor furnishing to many homes, offices, hotels, planes, auditorium, and many more places. Carpet is a popular choice to decorate the floor for some obvious reasons, such as:

The carpet makes a perfect floor decorating element. There are many varieties of carpet pattern and material available in the market that can bring out a different ambience to the room and accentuate the intended interior design.
Carpet helps to reduce noise. Especially in commercial premises,it helps to absorb reflecting noise emitted by footsteps from human traffic, ringing phones, printers, etc.
Carpet keeps the floor warm. This benefit is not practical in tropical country like Singapore as the climate is warm almost throughout the year. But if your premise is fully air conditioned, then it will be nice to walk on instead of walking on a cold, hard floor.

But with any textile furnishings, carpet need continuous maintenance in order to keep it in good condition and ensure indoor air quality is not compromised because carpet is known to trap immeasurable amount of dust and dirt particles, not to mention the micro organisms like dust mites, mold, bacteria, etc.

Ideally, carpet should be professionally cleaned at least once a year, depend on the human traffic walking on the carpet, to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned and maintained. But, in between the in-depth professional carpet cleaning schedules, there are a few DIY carpet cleaning steps which you can practice to maintain the carpet's condition:

Vacuum carpet at least once in 3 days, depending on the traffic condition. This is the most important step which you need to adhere diligently to upkeep the carpet condition. Huge amount of fine particles are brought into the carpet pile every day so regular vacuuming helps to minimize the amount of accumulated dirt particles instead of letting them to pile up within the carpet while waiting for the next in-depth carpet cleaning schedule. This negligence will become an indoor air hazard which will cause serious harm to health.
Always attend to any stain on the carpet immediately. Do not allow any stain remain on the carpet as the longer the stain stays on the carpet, the more difficult it will be to remove the stain.
Never rub when you attempt to remove stain on the carpet. Rubbing tends to spread the stain to a wider spot and you may also risk damaging the it. Always blot whenever attempting to remove stain on the carpet. Start from the outer edge of the stain and work on the stain using a clean white cloth towards the centre.
If stain can't be removed by blotting with water, blot the stain with diluted vinegar. If you prefer to use some form of foam, mix a tablespoon of mild dishwashing detergent with 2 cups of water and agitate the detergent solution till foams are formed. Blot the stain using the foam. Do not wet the carpet with the foam solution or you may risk damaging the carpet if it is not dried sufficiently.
Always dry damp or wet carpet immediately by using hair dryer or by sprinkling some baking powder to absorb the moisture. Mold and mild dew tend to thrive within damp carpet. Moisture in the carpet also encourages the growth of bacteria and other micro organism.
If you are looking for carpet shampoo or stain removal product from DIY store, always try the new product on a hidden spot first. In fact, ideally, it is advisable to check for recommended carpet cleaning shampoo or stain removal by your carpet installer or carpet retailer to ensure that the product used is safe for your carpet. If you are not sure, then leave the job to professional carpet cleaners who are equipped with the necessary products and trained to handle difficult stains.

Why Is It Important To Wash Your Windows?

How frequently do you wash your windows? Maybe once or twice a year? Perhaps never? But you know window cleaning should be done. There's nothing fascinating about looking out the window and seeing grime instead of having a clear view of how beautiful the day is. Freshly cleaned windows can brighten up a home or office.

Clean windows are an important part of home or office maintenance, but most people don't like to do it. Some people wash their windows a couple of times a year, but that's not enough. Window washing should be done regularly, at least once every two months, depending on the surrounding conditions. If you are in a city, or forest, it's a good idea to wash them at least monthly. If you're in a place where pollen and dirt don't always stick, you can do window cleaning every two months or so.

Importance of Window Cleaning and Window Washing

Windows get dirty over time. If they are not cleaned regularly, they increase the likelihood of irreparable damage as a result of etching of frames and glass. Calcium or lime scale build up on a window could damage and consequently require you to replace the window, which can be costly. Another problem is by not washing your windows, this increases the chances of salt water build-up which could possibly cause corrosion damage.

It is important to have your windows professionally washed or cleaned on a regular basis. Clean windows are obviously very important. Windows permit light to enter into your home which helps in heating your home in winter, thus lowering the electricity bills while brightening your home. Cleaned windows can greatly improve the appearance of a home or office, and also let in more natural light.

Window Cleaning Services

There are many individuals and businesses that can provide monthly or bimonthly services. Some of these services can even come at scheduled times throughout the year. Using this kind of scheduling can be convenient, of course, as it allows you to just go about your business or daily life and not bother about this chore. Once you have decided how often you want your windows cleaned, you can have the window cleaning service come at designated or scheduled times. Once that timeline is convenient for you, and you have a window washing service you are comfortable with, you will never be bothered by it again.

Considerations

Window washing is not one of those tasks many people want to undertake. Yet windows cleaned properly and regularly look fantastic and add the finishing touch on a home. This is because cleaning windows can be a difficult task. All too often windows end up covered with streaks after being washed or cleaned. Washing windows takes effort and time, but usually can be done properly by skilled person. Paying for professional window cleaning services is an investment, not an expense. Over time, it will cost you less. You will also enjoy the added benefit of having a sparkling clean house or office.

Home Cleaning Service For Chores You Don't Want To Do

It can be hard to find the time in the course of your busy day to address some of the domestic concerns of owning a house. At the end of a long day of work the last thing you want to do is to come back to your place and have to clean and straighten up everything. While it can be hard to find time to do it, there is no denying the fact that it needs to be done. Fortunately, for those with busy lives who are in need of assistance there are home cleaning service professionals who are happy to come out and do the menial tasks that are so often overlooked.

Home cleaning service allows property owners to feel at ease and comfortable in their space. A clutter free and dirt free living area offers peace of mind, but on the other hand when things are messy it can be stressful. These companies are skilled at coming in while you are away at work and doing all the little chores that are so hard to schedule time for. They will scrub out bathroom walls and sinks and also wash kitchen counters and stovetops. They will sweep and mop the floors and perform deodorizing tasks. When a person gets come back everything will be washed and smell fresh. This allows a person to simply enjoy their space in the evening and not worry about trying to stay abreast of domestic needs.

The trick to finding a home cleaning service to offer this incredible assistance is that it is difficult to find someone who can be trusted to be alone in the house during the day. This is a most sacred space and when a stranger is there alone it can be disconcerting. By hiring a professional company you get the added protection of knowing that a larger organization is standing behind the trustworthiness of a person. Hiring a local person does not assure this protection.

On the other hand while a larger home cleaning Service Company is more likely to protect a person against theft or damage, they have their drawbacks as well. They are generally more expensive for the same work and they also do not always send the same people to the house every week. That means that special requests or preferences may go unheeded. With a local person you have the benefit of dealing with the same person every time and you can instruct them to your needs and wants as necessary.

Home cleaning service from a professional company or a local contractor gives peace of mind and comfort while offering a much-needed service. Each have their benefits but both will give a person the satisfaction of knowing that their house will be in order when they return.

Can I Wash My Drapes?

Are your drapes looking dingy and dirty? Are stains and dust making you consider replacing them? Never fear, most drapes can be cleaned and returned to their original beauty. Valances and fabric shades or blinds can actually prove to be the most challenging, but they're still not incredibly hard to clean. Use this guide to clean your window dressings and get your home back to looking like it did when you first decorated it.

The good news is that almost all sheer curtains are machine washable. Most can even be put in the dryer. Check each panel of sheers in your home for tags. If you can find a tag, there should be fabric care instructions there. If they are cotton, polyester, or nylon, then they should be machine washable. If you're not sure, clean them in cool water with a little bit of clear laundry detergent or baby shampoo. Dyes can sometimes stain fabrics, so I choose to use a detergent without dyes.

Gently move the curtains around in the water every few minutes while you soak them for about an hour. Drain the tub, refill it, and then move them around again. Repeat this process a couple of times to rinse out any remaining soap residues. When they are clean, press the water out of them with a towel. You may want to fold them in half and roll them up in a towel to get remaining water out. Hang them to dry or put them in the dryer on a low heat setting.

Valances can be difficult because sometimes they are attached to the wall in a way that you can't get them down. They may also be wrapped around wood that should not be submerged, or even cardboard. The best way to clean a valance is with a vacuum. Brush the fabric gently with a soft bristled brush while you vacuum it if the fabric is sturdy enough to handle it. I gently pat the fabric with my hand to release settled dust while I do this. You can also use steam from your iron or a steam cleaner to perk-up those dull fabrics.

Drapes are a little trickier and most have to be dry cleaned. Check for tags to see if your drapes could be machine washable. If not, just hang them over hangers and take them to the dry cleaners. They are generally inexpensive to clean and will come back pressed and free of dust and stains.

What Sets a Cutting Edge Carpet Shampooer Apart From the Rest?

A carpet shampooer can be an important investment for any commercial or industrial area. The right kind of carpet cleaning equipment works efficiently to remove a range of different dirt and deposits. Not only are they thorough in cleaning, they also allow the rug to dry out faster afterward. Conversely, the wrong kind of carpet cleaning models can mean lower cleaning quality and longer drying times. A number of conventional carpet-cleaning units also rely on chemical cleaning agents, which means they can leave behind toxic fumes or traces after cleaning. Fortunately, there are units available that provide cutting-edge cleaning power that sets them apart from the rest.

Low Flow Technology

When searching for the right kind of carpet shampooer or extractor, it's important to look for the units that are designed for optimum cleaning and drying. One of the reasons why carpet cleaning is seen as a hassle is because the rugs take a long time to dry out after cleaning. Most conventional carpet cleaner units leave the rugs very damp afterward; in many cases, the area needs to be barricaded off for many hours, just so the rug can dry out. Needless to say, this can be a huge inconvenience in commercial areas and industrial complexes. If the climate is very humid or the building doesn't have proper ventilation, the rugs may not dry out completely. This can cause a foul odor and provide the perfect opportunity for mold and germs to grow in the damp rug.

This is why it is important to select a carpet shampooer that uses low water flow technology. This technology uses less water and more extraction powers to loosen and remove debris from carpets. Though these units do not rely on large volumes of water, this does not compromise their cleaning abilities in any way. The suction power and agitating abilities of carpet shampooer units loosen up deep-seated debris, ground-in stains, and hardened deposits. As a relatively low amount of water is used, the carpets are not left soaking wet after cleaning. In fact, a rug can dry out completely in just a few hours.

Quality Components

Apart from low flow technology, it's also important to look for carpet shampooer and carpet extractors that are made from quality parts. Industrial carpet cleaners and commercial carpet cleaners may be used for different tasks, but they both require units that are rugged and durable. When choosing the right kind of carpet cleaning machines and rug cleaners for your needs, it's important to pay attention to aspects like the housing. Sturdy, rugged housing insures that the unit's machinery is well-protected.

It's also important to select carpet shampooer or carpet extractors that have a heavy-duty tank. When investing in heated carpet cleaning units and rug cleaners, it's also important to look for the units that have inline heating elements. For powerful extraction capabilities, it's best to look for commercial carpet cleaners and industrial carpet cleaners that have a 12-inch adjustable rug wand. Investing in carpet cleaning machines that are made from quality components and have low-flow technology will mean cleaner rugs and a more convenient carpet-cleaning experience for the user.

Pipes and Home Cleaning 101

In order for you to stop having to clean your drains so much, you need to be careful about what you put down there. Some people are putting grease, hair and coffee grounds into the pipes. Add soap scum to this and you have not only a messy pipe system but a clogged one as well. Cooking grease should be put into a metal or plastic container and then disposed of in the trash can. Some communities also have special instructions regarding how to dispose of oil properly. Coffee grounds can either be thrown in the trash or used as mulch for your garden. You can purchase a drain holder that covers the drain and eliminate the problem of hair and soap scum blockages.

You should clean the pipes on a regular basis. This will help keep them running normally and will stop any nasty odors from developing. One home cleaning tip is to include running the hot water after each time you use the sink. Hot water will loosen up any clogs and make the pipes run smoothly. You can also use baking soda in the drain and then run some hot water after pouring it in the pipes to get rid of any offending odors. Another great method to clean your pipes is to empty a cup of vinegar down the drain and allow it to set for half an hour. Then turn on the hot water. Vinegar contains naturally occurring acid which helps to loosen up any sludge in your pipes.

If you find that your pipes are getting clogged on a regular basis, there are some things you can do to prevent this. In fact this little home cleaning trick works on pipes, sinks and showers. Take a half a cup of baking soda, a half a cup of salt, a half a cup of vinegar and 2 quarts of boiling water. Just before turning in for the night, pour the solution of salt and baking soda down the drain. Then add the vinegar and let it sit for about a minute. Then add the 2 quarts of boiling water. If your sink has a garbage disposal, there is another trick that you can try. Take an ice cube tray and fill it half vinegar and half water. You need to have the water because vinegar by itself will not freeze. Be sure to let everyone in the household know that certain trays have vinegar in them. Once the trays of vinegar ice are frozen, turn on your garbage disposal and add the ice cubes. Vinegar is an acid which is great for cleaning garbage disposal as well as the pipes. If you absolutely cannot stand the smell of vinegar, you can just freeze a regular tray of ice cubes, pour them down your garbage disposal and then add a lemon that is sliced up. You will be surprised that your disposal and your entire kitchen smells amazing.

You can try all these great home cleaning tricks to keep your drain clean and to prevent it from clogging. Just remember that there are some things that are not made to go down any pipes or drains.

Top House Cleaning Service Considerations

A house cleaner is a bit of a luxury no doubt, but for many with busy lives, it is well worth the expense to keep one's home clean and tidy. Here is a collection of tips to keep in mind.

Know who you are hiring: It is important to do some background research on any firm or individual you are considering. If hiring a house cleaning firm, be sure to confirm they have proper licenses and they are bonded and insured. Hiring an individual these days is a bit of a risk, as many do not carry the proper insurance. This can leave you liable if there are injuries sustained by the employee, or it would leave you no recourse if something gets broken or goes missing.

Prepare your home for cleaning: There are a few things that you should do before the house cleaning service arrives. First, put jewelry, valuables, and cash in a safe, out of the way. If you've done your background work, the risk of theft is likely low. This will remove any issue and it could help you avoid things getting damaged or misplaced.

It is also a good idea to try and reduce daily clutter so the cleaners can be more efficient. If your household bills are scattered on the dining table or the kid's art supplies are all over the kitchen counter, it makes cleaning harder where you won't get a good job done.

Also, make a list of your priority cleaning items and provide any other instructions that are important to you. If you have certain cleaners that you prefer and you are responsible for hiring them, make sure that you have an adequate supply of materials where the cleaners know where to find them.

Let the cleaners know your cleaning bug bares: Everyone has something that drives them crazy, if it's not done correctly. A scenario such as sitting on your favorite chair in the afternoon where you can see dust under an end table that catches the light and looks like snow can definitely upset you. It's making sure the items on the shelf are put back the way you like it. Whatever it is, if it bugs you, let the house cleaning crew know about it so that they could act accordingly.

The same goes for cleaning supplies. Some people have preferences for different cleaners or techniques. Discuss it with the cleaners and agree on an approach. You may find out that they have a better or less harmful cleaner or some trick they have from experience. No matter the case, communication is vital to the long-term success of a house cleaning service.

Stay out of the way: Aside from showing the cleaners what you want done, try and stay out of the way and resist the temptation of getting into the action and clean alongside. Also, keep kids and pets away from the cleaners. This will likely just slow things down. You should refrain from offering food or drink as house cleaners are there to get the work done. They need to get on to the next job or go home for the day.

Be Appreciative: Just as it is important to provide feedback on improvement, it is also recommended to let house cleaners know when they're doing a good job. Tipping is certainly not required even if your home was in particularly bad shape, or if you asked them to do something out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, tipping is certainly appreciated.

If you are using the same house cleaning crew regularly, an end-of-year gratuity can also show gratitude.

How a Home Cleaning Service Can Change Your Life

There are countless ways in which to improve your life. You can lose weight, take a class, learn something new, or reduce your work hours. You can make more money, find a better partner, or start working out. But one of the best ways you can change your life is reduce the amount of time you spend doing things other than living it. Let's face it, very few people see vacuuming and mopping as chores they would rather be doing than anything else. But freeing up your time is only one way in which a home cleaning service can change your life. Here are some more benefits to taking the plunge.

Get Rid of the Clutter

A dirty room is the love of every teenage boy and the bane of every mother. But clutter is more than just something to be embarrassed about. While there is the occasional story about a genius that can't do his best work in anything less than a complete pigsty, the majority of people can function far more efficiently in a clean space. Even if you aren't worried about getting work done in your house, it is difficult for many people to simply relax when they look around and see an unmade bed here and a messy kitchen counter there. A home cleaning service will make sure you can concentrate on the things you want to do, even if it's nothing more important than watching TV.

An Inviting Abode

It doesn't matter whether you work in an immaculate office all day or a sloppy barn; the last thing you want to come home to is a mess. A mess means more work and that isn't something you want to think about on the commute. On the other hand, a house that has been made spotless from top to bottom by a professional home cleaning service is one that extends its arms out in a warm embrace as you pull into your driveway. You remember the wonderful smell of baking cookies when you walked into your grandmother's house? It can be like that again, except the smell might be lemon-scented cleaner instead of gingerbread.

Keeping Up With The Chores

Even if you are fairly good about keeping up with a regular tidying schedule, you probably have a tendency to let the big jobs slack for a while. If you let enough of them slack, you will be forced to set aside a weekend every now and then to really clean from floor to ceiling. If you have a home cleaning service keeping up with all of the necessary chores, you don't have to ever lose another weekend to such a mundane task.

Cash For Clutter - Decluttering Tips That Earn You Money

What could be better than getting decluttered? Fame, a genie in a bottle, a new car? Ok, ok, that might be a little out of reach right now, but we can make money from our clutter! How nice would it be to get rid of some of your extra things that are taking up space and making your house cluttered and end up with extra money?!?

The best way to go about this is to integrate it as part of your "normal" decluttering. For instance, let's say that you are cleaning out your basement and going through all the shelves of games, books, and other items that have accumulated. Odds are that you have some items that someone will want; our goal is to make some quick money from these items. What we need to remember is that the end goal is still to be decluttered, we don't want to wait weeks or months for someone to buy our $3 book when we would gain more from donating it and getting it out of the house.

An interesting side note - if you are considering selling your home in the near future, you should really be decluttering now! On top of the fact that no one wants to come into a home that is full of clutter and think about the work that will need to be done before they move in, the value of your home (as well as the perceived) value is increased by keeping it free of clutter and organized. A study conducted in 2003 showed that at a cost of around $400 (which we can do by following the Get Rid Of Clutter program for a tiny fraction of that cost!) home owners realized a profit of $2,000 - that's a 500% profit! That is quite a good return for the time and money used, not to mention the fact that a decluttered house is much more likely to sell quickly instead of staying on the market costing you money in bills, taxes, and more.

Ok, back to the task at hand - making some money from our decluttering efforts! Keeping this in mind as we go through our decluttering can really help to focus us on getting rid of items that we might otherwise make up a reason to keep. Remember, ask yourself these questions as you go through the process of decluttering an area:

Is this item useful? If it is useful, is it used? An object that is not used is not useful.Does this item make me happy to see it? If it is hiding in the back of a closet, how happy does it really make me?Does this item bring back joyful emotions when I see it, hear it, or smell it? Again, if it is hiding in the back of a closet or shelf somewhere, how important is this to me?

If the things that we are going through do not fit into one of those three categories, then we really need to consider putting them into the clutter pile and moving on.

After deciding what it is that you want to sell, you need to develop an idea of the price that you want to sell it for - remember, the idea is to get rid of clutter AND make some extra money. Do not price items too high or you will end up holding onto them. Selling used items usually means selling them cheap. Make life easy on yourself and discount your items so that they sell fast - you will be happier in the end instead of holding out for the sale that might not happen with a higher price.

If you have trouble deciding what to charge for your item, look at the same places where you might sell to get an idea of what prices other people are charging. Go ahead and look at the list below to get an idea of where to look.

So, how can we turn the clutter into cash? We have many options! Here is a short list - each one of these could be a short article, or book chapter on its own (several of these are discussed in the book and via our training course). Some of these work better for others, sometimes it can take a little trial and error to see what works best for you. Look at the options and comments below to see what you think could make you the most money from your decluttering.

Craigslist - a great online site for selling anything and everything. Great for selling furniture and large items locally. Pro: you can sell just about anything from Craigslist and there is likely a buyer out there for it. Con: You will have to meet in person, whether at your house or at a meeting spot.Amazon - Amazon can sell your used items and takes a small fee. Pro: great for selling books and you only need to mail the item once it sells. Con: Setting up the item to sell can take a bit longer and Amazon takes a cut that is proportional to the sale price.eBay - eBay lets you set the price in its auction environment, a good place for some electronics and other niche items. Pro: Fairly easy to setup, if you have a good item you can start a bidding war and get top dollar. Con: Competition can be fierce in certain categories.Garage sale - The tried and true way to get rid of clutter in a local fashion. Pro: No need to post anything online (except for advertising your garage sale). Con: Dependent on things like weather, your neighborhood, etc.

Most people have enough clutter in their homes to make them a decent amount of money. From good condition books to extra furniture, it is not unusual for people to find that they have several hundred dollars or more or surplus items sitting around their homes not being used. Think about what you could do with that extra money! Enjoy!

Pressure Washing Tips

If you are a home or business owner and you are thinking about doing some pressure washing around your home or business, there are a few important things that you should consider and understand before you attempt anything of this nature.

Pressure Washing is a common service that many home, property or business owners may decide to attempt themselves and not engage a professional power washing services company or contractor. However if they are unprepared, then this will more than likely turn into a big mistake because it will take up too much of your valuable time, time probably better spent on doing something else. Also because the results that you are likely to achieve will be far less superior than if you had engaged a company who specialize in doing this type of thing day in and day out every day of the year.

The biggest issue that could result is damaging your property, house or building. Damage that could be permanent without expensive replacement costs.

If you are up for the challenge then let me point out the basics of what you need to know before you undertake such a task, this is from somebody who has been in the pressure cleaning or pressure washing industry depending on what part of the world you are from for nearly 15 years.

Identify the stains that you are trying to remove (sodium hydrochloride is great for mold, mildew and algae. De-greasers should be used for oil and grease stains on driveways)Identify the substrate that you are attempting to clean (some substrates such as concrete will tolerate much higher pressure, whereas bricks and sandstone are much more delicate and can only withstand low pressure)Make sure you have the proper equipment and attachments for the job (many pressure washers that home owners buy are not suitable for the job of cleaning large scale areas such as a home or driveway. Also if you have an industrial strength pressure washer, ensure you have the right nozzles and lances to make the job easier)Realize that pressurized water alone is not sufficient and you will need to find appropriate cleaning agents to complete the job to the highest level (as with any cleaning procedure, water alone can only do so much. You need cleaning chemicals or agents to complete the task)Wear appropriate P.P.E Personal Protective Equipment (Ear Muffs, Water Proof Clothing, Hat, Gloves, Boots. Wear a respiratory when working with chemicals)Ensure that waste water is not going to escape into storm water drains and pollute the environment (it is against the law in most areas to have waste water from pressure washing run into drains and hefty fines apply)Ensure plants and gardens will not suffer from over spray of chemicals or from flooding (an inexperienced contractor could easily kill plants or small shrubs or trees during a pressure washing undertaking. Ensure that your garden is protected)

Tips on How to Clean Your Windows

Window cleaning is an important way to ensure that your home and business look their best. Not only will this provide you with a warm and welcoming appearance, but it can also help to preserve the glass of your windows, since the dirt and grime that can build up on them can cause scratching.

There are some simple ways that you can keep your windows clean outside of hiring a window washing company. Take a moment to consider these tips are being some of the things you can do.

To begin with, you will want to use clean water with just a little soap when possible. A mild soap is going to help to break down the grease that can build up on your windows and leave them looking cleaner, without the dangerous chemicals that are often found in industrial solutions. Of course, you will need to ensure that right after your window cleaning that you do dry off the windows with a squeegee to prevent streaking.

Something to keep in mind when you are window washing is that your water is going to need to be changed regularly. If the water becomes too dirty, you are going to find that you end up spreading around the dirt, rather than ever getting it clean. A little discoloring isn't going to be an issue in the water, but as soon as it becomes murky, you will want to replace it.

Another important part of window washing will be to use a scraper to remove buildup on the windows before you wash it. If you try to wash the window while the hard buildup is there, it will be possible that you end up smearing the dirt and creating a bigger mess. Just make sure that you are being gentle as you scrape the glass to avoid putting scratches on it.

An important part of window cleaning that is often overlooked is how to proceed with the window washing. It is important that you begin outside and work to the inside of windows to ensure that you are getting the best results possible. With that, you will also want to clean from the top of your windows to the bottom to ensure that you are pushing down the mess, rather than from side to side instead. After all, what you are looking for is to have the cleanest windows possible.

As you are window cleaning, make sure that you do wash in a circular motion, and then dry with the squeegee from the top of the window to the base. The circular motion is going to break down the dirt better and help to ensure that window streaking is reduced.

Keep these simple steps in mind when you are looking to wash your windows. By following this advice, you do increase the chance you have for success and ensure that your windows are going to look great every time you set out to wash them.

Benefits of Hiring a Reliable Residential Home Cleaning Service

There are various cleaning companies out there that claim to offer quality services but few that come through with this promise. It is therefore important to hire a reliable residential home cleaning service. However, many people wonder what benefit there is to hiring a professional cleaning service. Wouldn't it be better to hire an individual or contractor at a lower price?

In today's society, security is one of our highest concerns. Watching the news is enough to discourage us from allowing strangers into our homes. When you are considering hiring a professional cleaner, this will be one of your greatest concerns. You need to trust the cleaners to some degree to allow them into your home. This is not easy when hiring an individual.

Using a professional service will take this burden off your shoulders. The service will allow you to hire a professional that has been checked thoroughly. Many reliable services carry out background checks that include checking criminal history records, employment records and other such files. This process can be tedious to an individual who may end up doing a half baked job of it. You can therefore rest assured that your safety has been taken into account by the professional company.

Quality is also a great concern when hiring cleaners. Whether it is an individual or a group of cleaners, you will want them to do a thorough job. It is therefore important to get references from previous employers to determine the kind of quality the cleaner will give you. However, this process is also a tedious one. Professional residential home cleaning services will carry out the reference verification for you and ensure that the cleaners have been trained to high standards. You can therefore rest assured that you will be getting a professional cleaner.

A reliable residential home cleaning service also ensures that all its employees are insured. This will ensure that you are compensated adequately in case of any accidents or loss of items resulting from the cleaner's activities. You will not have to make a claim from your own insurance.

Insurance is also important for the cleaner. In case an accident occurs while cleaning your home, the cleaner will be fully compensated by the company. You will not have to worry about having to cover any medical fees or paying the cleaner while recovering. The insurance of the cleaning service will do all that. It is therefore important to check the insurance cover of the company before you hire them.

Hiring professional residential home cleaning services will give you peace of mind and allow you to create time for other activities. You will have a clean home and lots of free time for your family and other projects.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Laundry Detergent

Shop with laundry detergent coupons

Whether you prefer to search through mailers and fliers on a weekly basis for coupons and mail in rebates or online at your favorite coupon website, there are numerous deals to find. Popular brands will routinely provide coupons and rebates for their various products. Often when a new product line is introduced, the manufacturer will offer some type of incentive to get you to try the new product out.

Buy in bulk

Wholesalers like Costco and Sam's Club will often sell bulk quantity detergents and cleaners, potentially saving you money. Make sure to compare the package size or the number of loads you can get from each container, both for powder and liquid detergents. Ultimately, you're looking for the lowest cost per unit or cost per load when you're trying to find the best deal.

Follow the detergent directions carefully

Even if you save a few bucks on your laundry detergent purchase, if you don't pay attention to amount you should be using per load, you're potentially using too much, which will ultimately cost you money. If a liquid detergent is supposed to be dispensed in 2 oz portions, but you don't bother to measure and end up using 3 oz at a time, you're wasting 50% of the product!

Buy only detergents are on sale

Depending on how retailers and grocery stores stock up on a particular brand or product line, they may eventually be in a position where they need to move product to make room for upcoming shipments of other goods. This means that the grocery store or shop might be offering up a sale to clear shelf space, which is a good time for you to consider make a purchase and stock up.

Search online auctions for potential deals on detergent

Sellers on eBay.com will offer up all kinds of stuff, including cleaning products and laundry detergents. Doing a quick search for your favorite brand names may reveal a good deal. Make sure to evaluate any potential shipping costs to determine if the overall purchase is a better deal than what you could get otherwise at your local grocery store.

Discount and Dollar Stores

Often times, these specialty retailers will have a batch of detergent that they buy cheap from some other retailer and in term are able to offer you the consumer low prices. Check around to see what kinds of deals are out there. Even ask the shop keepers to see if they regularly get detergents to sell.

Remaining Rinse Process (relevant to all above strategies of spot elimination).

Add mix into a spray container and spray over the tarnished region.
Blot moistened region (do not rub) to eliminate surplus moisture content.
Distribute white kitchen towel (placed 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbing towel over the afflicted region and position a weight, like a telephone directory, on top.
Leave overnight and repeat if required.

Although the stain eradication guide may be simple, it ought to help avoid some fairly common and costly DIY stain elimination damage. Regrettably, there can never be a guarantee of total removal of a stain, but the appropriate routine will give your expert cleaner, when called in, the best probable chance of success.

REMEMBER: Act Swiftly. Clean up solids, soak up fluids. Take a good deal of time, it is worth the energy. Blend the solution correctly and check it on an out of the way piece of carpet. Always work from the external fringe of the mark to the middle. Pat or blot instead of scrubbing or rubbing. And, most significantly, NEVER OVER-WET.

Why Should I Get My Air Ducts Cleaned?

Some of the benefits of air duct cleaning are that system cleaning will allow systems to run more efficiently by removing debris from sensitive mechanical components. Clean, efficient systems are less likely to breakdown. They have a longer life span, and generally operate more efficiently than dirty systems. Duct cleaning can also reduce the amount of allergens in the duct system. These allergens can be circulated throughout the home with your forced air system.

How a forced air system works is that air is drawn into the system through your return grills and fed into the system through your return ductwork. The air from the return side of the ductwork is fed into the lower compartment of the furnace; where the blower is located. The air passes through the filter and then is pushed up with the help of the blower. The air then passes through the upper part of the furnace where it can be heated or cooled depending on if the heat or air conditioning is on. The air then flows through the supply side duct work to the supply side grills where it exits into the rooms either heated or cooled. The process repeats itself throughout the day and evening until the temperature that has been set at the thermostat has been reached.

The air travels in a circular motion from return to supply side. While you have a filter you must understand that filters vary in efficiency. Some are 90% efficient. Some are only 5% efficient. What does this mean? If a filter is 90% efficient it will stop approximately 90% of what passes through the filter. If a filter is 5% efficient it will only stop approximately 5% of what passes through the filter. This is a very basic explanation there is more to it than this but the important point is that a 90% filter is much better than a 5% filter. Which do you have?

Whatever filter you have it isn't 100% filtration. You couldn't heat or cool your home with 100% filtration because no air could pass through that type of filtration. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends that you clean your air ducts every 3 to 5 years. When was the last time you had your air ducts cleaned? Have you ever had your air ducts cleaned? If you had your ducts cleaned did you get a professional job, not did you pay for a professional job, did you get one?

Clean ducts helps to create a healthier living environment. Clean air ducts help furnaces operate more efficiently. Clean air ducts help your system run longer. So if you can't remember when you last had your air ducts cleaned your probably over due. So do your best to select a reputable duct cleaner. There are many unscrupulous air duct cleaners out there so ask your friends if they have a recommendations. Referrals are one of the best ways to find a good service provider. Angie's list is another great resource or possibly a local chamber of commerce. Good luck in getting your air ducts cleaned. Start breathing easier today, why wait?

Residential Air Cleaning Services

Every homeowner should be aware of the state of their home's indoor air quality. Every building has many different allergens threatening the air. Dirty dryer vents and HVAC vents are just two examples of appliances that can infect a living space. Thankfully there are professional residential air cleaning services that can help with these problems. Professional cleaning services not only help keep the air healthy, but they help improve breathing, keep appliances working most efficiently, and can even help save money on energy bills. These professional services and air quality testing is suggested every 2 years.

Having your home's air ducts cleaned is one of the best maintenance services you can do. Your HVAC system is literally the source of all your breathing air. HVAC systems feed the entire home and can acquire up to 40 pounds of dust a year! That is an outrageous realization to think how much is contaminating your home just from everyday living. Professional cleaning services take advantage of negative and positive air to clean the ducts. This is a chemical free service that prevents the dust and particles from blowing back into your home when the cleaning is being done. There are also chemical cleaning treatments available. Duct cleaning is an extremely thorough service where virtually every inch of the system is cleaned. Not only does this help improve air quality but it keep the HVAC unit running its best. An efficiently working system means less energy use and lower bills.

Your dryer vent should also be cleaned! Although dryer lint should be removed by users regularly, this service is still recommended for many reasons. First off, there are generally signs that it is time to have your dryer vent cleaned. If the flapper on the vent hood won't open when the dryer is going, if the laundry is especially hot at the end of the cycle, or if clothes are taking an extra long time to dry, then you should clean the vent. This helps improve the performance of the machine, increases the dryer's lifetime, prevents mold and moisture, and prevents fires. Did you know that around 15,000 fires happen each year because of dirty dryer vents alone?

Having clean air is important to your health and can help prevent allergies and the symptoms that go along with them. Professional companies are available to help with a full range of cleaning services from duct cleaning to moisture barriers. Keeping up with air quality testing and cleaning is a smart thing for every home owner do to.

A Guide to Carpet Steam Cleaning

Carpets are a lot of work to take care of. This is because stuff gets spilled on them, people walk through the house with dirty shoes on and there seems to be pet hair everywhere. Even though you vacuum your carpets on a regular basis, it just really isn't enough because it doesn't get the carpet clean. Machines that clean floor tapestry are made to take away tough stains as well as dirt. They can also take away allergens including mold and pet dander. Get Carpet Ink Stains Out of the Way

Imagine for a moment that you are working on some documents and your pen gets broken, spilling a considerable amount of ink on your shirt. This is one of those things that can really make a person go off-the-rails. The most frustrating stain would be an ink stain on light-colored pants, t-shirt, shirt or carpet. I am certain that many carpet-owners have experienced how difficult it is to get rid of an ink stain that ended up on their carpet. Indeed, if you let an ink stain stay for a while, it will become more difficult to clean and could damage the fiber of your carpet.

Though it is not easy to clean ink off a light-colored carpet, it is not impossible. Actually, to get the best out of your carpet cleaning efforts, you need some helpful tips on how to go about it. There are several steps to follow if you must get rid of an ink stain on your carpet.

First, you must ensure that the stain is treated immediately it gets on the carpet. This is the first treatment you should give your carpet. This remedial action prevents the stain from becoming more difficult to clean. When you let the ink stain sit longer than it should, then you are in for a difficult carpet cleaning session. Remember, the best moment for your carpet cleaning magic to work on an ink stain is immediately it occurs.

Secondly, you would want to start by getting a neat cloth, preferably cotton-made. You will throw some alcohol on this piece of cloth. The best type of alcohol to address this situation would be Isopropyl. After the alcohol has soaked in, use the said cloth to blot out the stain from the affected area. The ink will slowly move from the carpet to the cloth. This step should be repeated several times. You must repeat this process until there is no longer any ink on the alcohol-soaked-cloth when rubbed on the affected area.

However, if this process does not completely get rid of the ink, get some carpet cleaning product from the nearest store and use it on the stain. After step one, the stain will be greatly reduced and this second step should help even more. As with the alcohol, apply the product on a clean cloth and blot the affected area. After two to four times of blotting, the stain should no longer be visible.

Indeed, remember to rinse the area you have just treated with clean water so that no residue should accumulate on the carpet.

To conclude, it is very important to have a few carpet cleaning tips under your sleeves so that your carpet cleaning endeavors would yield much.

A Great Cleaning Service Begins With Great People

Wouldn't you enjoy having your home or business polished by expertly trained and hard working people who take pride in what they do?

In the wonderful day and age we all live in, this is entirely possible.

Everyone seems to live a demanding lifestyle. Our days are chock full of running errands, chauffeuring the kids to ball games or doing a multitude of other things. Plus, most of us work outside the home during the daylight hours. Needless to say, daily necessities do not allow for extra precious time to clean our homes or businesses.

That's really not a good thing.

Many people are simply so busy they have no choice but to hire a cleaning service.

When you reach this point, the very first thing you must look for is the kind of people your intended cleaning service hires. As mentioned above, the "must haves" are fully qualified, hard working, and proud professionals.

Next, when you interview them, consider whether you can trust this company. That's very important too. You can always ask your friends or neighbors if they have used them and if they felt totally comfortable with having them in your home. Some people elect to have them tidy up while they are at their place of employment so this quality is of utmost importance. Be sure to ask the company manager if background checks are regularly performed on their employees.

For peace of mind, ask if they are fully bonded and licensed and if they offer any sort of guarantee on their work.

Another nice amenity of a cleaning service is that work can be regularly scheduled to meet your schedule, not theirs. Most services will attend to your needs either weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly - whatever suits you. They will even clean your home or business one time only if you're moving in or out of your home.

Another vital question to ask is whether you will have to sign a contract? Most companies do not require this, but it's better to ask up front.

Remember how much a tidy house once made you feel so good inside, so inspired? You felt as if you could soar to greater heights. You could actually rush to the door when the bell rings, swing it wide open and tell whoever is standing there, "Oh, do come in (even it's just the UPS man)." You can experience that phenomenal feeling once more when you allow these busy little bees transform your home into a palace - a clean palace.

It's been said a home is like a castle to a man, (or woman). If that's the case, then why on earth would you ever do the dirty work yourself? Kings and queens do not do that! You are the king or queen of your home, so neither should you.

What To Look For in a Dumpster Rental Company

No matter why you need a dumpster, whether it's commercial or personal, you will more than likely need to rent one from a dumpster rental company. While you may believe that a dumpster is a dumpster, the company you rent from may still greatly impact your overall experience and final costs. Here are some things to look for in your dumpster rental company.

Seek Experience
In a business that relies so heavily on repeat customers and overall reputation, you want a dumpster rental company that has weathered the long haul and survived: in short, an established and experienced company. Many of the dumpster rental businesses you may find may end up being untrustworthy pop up rental companies that exist for one or two years, crumble under a poor reputation, and then pop up somewhere else under a different name, trying to pull the same tricks. A well-established company will have none of these issues and will be able to prove worthy of their reputation. As an added precaution, feel free to check reviews for every company you consider and ask for references if you like. Good reviews and good references will be an easy determiner of a truly excellent company.

Go Local
Locally owned businesses have much more to gain from having your business, so they will go out of their way to actually earn your business through excellent customer service and dedicated employees. Larger corporations can take or leave your business, so they will not go out of their way to make sure that you are satisfied with their performance. In addition, larger waste managing corporations have huge overhead fees that smaller local companies do not, and they will often pass on those costs to their customers who believe that their big name will provide better service for the price.

How Do They Handle Waste?
The dumpster rental business is a simple one: you pay to rent and fill a dumpster, then the company pays to dump the dumpster's contents into a landfill. When a company pays for everything it dumps, it either goes out of its way to dump as little as possible or it passes the costs of dumping everything onto its customers. Try to find a dumpster rental company that recycles or donates everything it can from its dumpsters before hauling them to the landfill. Not only will you be certain that the dumpster rental company is trying to save you from additional costs, but you can feel comfortable knowing that they're helping to save the environment by diverting trash from the landfills into more eco-friendly avenues.

Butcher Chopping Block Maintenance: How to Clean and Oil in Five Easy Steps

Wooden counter tops add warmth and beauty to any kitchen. Unlike other trendy counter top surfaces, wooden counter tops are timeless and never go out of style. They also add functional value to a kitchen that appeals to chefs and foodies. However, they are not completely care free. They need to be kept clean and sealed in order to maintain the surface. Proper maintenance will not only lengthen the life of your counter top, but will keep it hygienic. Five easy steps for maintaining all of your wooden cutting surfaces, including counter tops and chopping blocks are listed below.

You will need:

Dish detergent

Scrubby sponge

White vinegar

Either lemon juice and salt Or water and baking soda

Mineral oil

Step one - Clean.

Cleaning the board with warm soapy water and a scrubbing sponge will get off any visible debris and will remove a small amount of oil from the board. Use warm water and scrub gently. You aren't trying to sanitize with this step so don't use hot water. Hot water is unnecessarily aggressive and will damage the board over time. Rinse all of the soap off when the surface is clean.

A word of caution - do not submerge portable boards in water. Water will soak into the wood fibers causing the wood to swell and warp. This breaks the glue bond in the lamination. Then as the wood dries, it cracks.

Step two - Sanitize.

Sanitize your butcher board by wiping it down with full strength white vinegar. Why vinegar? Vinegar is an effective disinfectant against common kitchen bugs such as e.coli, staphylococcus, and salmonella. Vinegar is not damaging to the wood fibers like chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach is corrosive and it's effects are accumulative. Over time it changes the color of the wood and it breaks down the lignan (the natural glue between the fibers). The wood will look ashy even after it is oiled and the fibers will have microscopic tatters for bacteria to hide in. It's a good idea to keep a spray bottle of vinegar handy to use as a regular sanitizer for your wooden cutting surfaces.

I use vinegar and air drying to sanitize my wooden counter tops and it works great. However, if you need extra assurances, you can allow your butcher board to dry after the vinegar treatment, then wipe it down with 3% hydrogen peroxide.

After sanitizing, you can move to steps four and five, allowing the board to dry and then oiling it. Or you can do some additional deep cleaning as in step three if you have a heavy build up of oils, odors, or stains.

Step three - Deep Cleaning

Make a paste of salt and lemon juice OR water and baking soda. Using a scrubby sponge, lightly swirl the paste around focusing on stains if you have any. This paste mixture will lightly strip away old oils. It will also deodorize the wood and lighten stains. Both lemon juice and baking soda are aggressive cleaners so don't allow them to just sit on the board for hours. Just gently scrub the paste around for a few minutes and rinse it completely away when you are done.

Step four - Dry

Allow block to dry completely....over night is best. A dry environment is the best defense against bacteria, mold and virus. Allowing the board to dry completely before oiling it helps to lock moisture OUT rather than sealing it in. Also, the dryer the wood is, the more easily it will soak up oil.

Before you oil your butcher board look it over. If you still have stains use a sanding block to remove light stains or use a palm sander with a fine grit paper to sand down the entire board.

Step five - Seal with oil

Oil your butcher board. Oiling your wooden counter tops and cutting boards helps to protect the wood from damage and keeps the surface hygienic. The oil creates a water resistant barrier. It keeps the wood dry and keeps bacteria out. The best oil to use is food grade mineral oil as it will not go rancid the way vegetable based oils will. This can be found in the laxative department of your local drug store or you may find it also at your local hardware store. Just pour a little onto the board and rub it in with your clean hands or use a clean lint free rag. If you really want to pump up the water resistance of your oil, you can warm it and add bees wax or paraffin to it. Use a ratio of one part wax to nine parts oil. When this oil has soaked into your wood, it will leave behind a thin waxy layer that is even more water resistant!

Every type of counter top needs basic maintenance. Granite needs polishing. The grout in a tile counter top needs scrubbing. A wooden counter top or butcher chopping block needs to be cleaned and oiled. With a little bit of care your wooden cutting surfaces can last life times and add functional value to your kitchen.
